CDG to Orly (or Orly to CDG): how long does it take?

Charles de Gaulle and Orly sit on opposite sides of Paris — CDG to the north-east, Orly to the south — about 45 to 50 km (28 to 31 miles) apart by road, depending on the terminals and the route. By car, count about 45 minutes with clear roads and 1 h to 1 h 30 at peak times. Orly to CDG follows exactly the same logic in reverse.

There are two sensible ways round. Straight through: the A1 motorway from Roissy, a stretch of the Périphérique ring road, then the A6 south to Orly. Around the east: the A104 and A86, which skirt the city and avoid the ring road altogether. Neither is always faster. Our chauffeurs choose at departure on live traffic and adjust on the way if an incident closes a lane.

What to expect, depending on when you travel:

  • Early morning before 7 am, evening after 8 pm, overnight — about 45 minutes.
  • Weekday peaks, 7–10 am and 4:30–7:30 pm — 1 h to 1 h 30, occasionally more when the ring road or the A6 is blocked after an accident.
  • Midday and weekends — usually somewhere between those two figures, with Friday and Sunday evenings the busiest.

For a connection, the drive is only one link in the chain: landing, baggage, transfer, check-in, security. We go through that timeline further down.

CDG to Orly transfer: an honest comparison of your options

Four realistic ways to get from CDG to Orly, or back, compared on the criteria that count when you have a second flight to catch. We sell one of them, so we have tried to be scrupulously fair with the other three.

Journey times are indicative and depend on traffic and the terminals involved. Chauffeur fares are fixed in writing at booking; taxi fares are metered and public-transport fares are set by Île-de-France Mobilités.

Private chauffeur. The only option that is genuinely door to door: your chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, takes the bags, and drops you at the kerb of the exact departure terminal. No queue, no change, no ticket machine. The price is fixed before you book, so a jammed ring road costs you nothing; your flight is tracked, so a late landing costs you nothing either. At quiet hours it is comfortably the fastest way between the two airports; at peak the road and the train draw closer, but you are still sitting down with your luggage in the boot. Our CDG airport transfer and Orly airport transfer pages describe the pick-up at each airport.

Taxi. Official ranks at every terminal, no change. But the regulated Paris taxi flat fares apply only between Paris and each airport — they do not cover CDG to Orly, so the ride is metered and the fare rises with every minute in traffic. It usually ends up close to our price, with no guaranteed price or vehicle in advance, and after a busy landing the rank queue eats into a connection. A fair choice for one or two people who have not booked ahead and travel off-peak. Our page on taxis to Orly explains the flat fares that do exist.

RER B + Orlyval. The classic rail route: RER B from the CDG stations (Terminal 2 or Terminal 3/Roissypole; from Terminal 1, take the CDGVAL shuttle first) south to Antony, then the Orlyval automatic shuttle to the Orly terminals. Allow about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 door to door. This is the right pick if you travel alone, with a single light bag, outside rush hour and on a tight budget: it is by far the cheapest way across. It is the wrong pick with two suitcases and a pushchair, late at night, or on a connection where every minute counts, because you carry everything through stairs and platforms and any disruption on the line lands on you.

RER B + Metro 14. Since the line 14 extension in 2024, you can also take the RER B to Châtelet–Les Halles and change to the metro, which now runs straight to Orly airport. Timing is similar to the Orlyval route, the change at Châtelet involves long corridors, and the RER B is crowded at peak: fine for a solo traveller who knows the Paris metro, hard work with luggage or a family.

What about a direct bus? As far as we know there is no longer a direct public bus between the two airports: the former direct line was withdrawn. Today a "CDG Orly shuttle" means either the train with a change, or a private car booked in advance. For the wider picture on shared and private options, see our Paris airport shuttle page.

The price is per vehicle, not per person, and identical in both directions. You see it in the form at the top of this page before you book, and it does not move afterwards — not for traffic, not for a late flight, not because it is 5 am on a Sunday.

Connecting between CDG and Orly: the minimum time to allow

Our recommendation: allow at least 4 hours between landing at one airport and departure from the other. Drop to 3 h 30 only if you know both airports well, travel light and are crossing off-peak.

The reason is simple. CDG and Orly are two separate airports with no airside transit between them. Your bags are not transferred: you collect them at the carousel, cross Paris, then check them in again, clear security again and, if your second flight leaves the Schengen area, passport control again. Each step is short on a good day and long on a bad one. Four hours absorbs a bad one.

A sample timeline for a long-haul landing at CDG followed by a domestic flight from Orly:

  • 10:00 — wheels down at CDG 2E. Taxiing and disembarking a full wide-body: 15 to 25 minutes.
  • 10:20–10:50 — passport control, then baggage reclaim. On a non-Schengen arrival, 30 minutes from gate to hall is a reasonable planning figure; it can be noticeably longer.
  • 10:50 — you walk out into the arrivals hall; your chauffeur is there with the name sign and takes the bags. Five minutes to the car.
  • 10:55–12:00 — the transfer itself, late-morning traffic, about an hour. You are dropped at the door of your Orly terminal.
  • 12:00–12:30 — bag drop and check-in. Most airlines close bag drop 40 to 60 minutes before departure; check yours.
  • 12:30–13:00 — security and walk to the gate.
  • 14:00 — a departure at this time or later gives you the 4-hour margin, with an hour in hand for a slow carousel or a closed lane on the A6.

One piece of advice before you book anything: check with your airline whether both flights are on one ticket. Some airlines sell CDG/Orly connections as a single booking, in which case they set the minimum connection time and generally look after you if the first flight is late. Others do not, and with two separate tickets the second airline owes you nothing if you miss the flight. That changes how much margin to take, so settle it before you choose a time for your transfer.

How your transfer works

1. Book in 2 minutes

Choose the direction, the terminals, the date and the time of your landing, and add your flight number. The fixed price appears before you confirm, and nothing is charged until you do. Online any time, or by phone on +33 1 53 26 04 33, 7 days a week.

2. We track your flight

Your flight number is followed in real time. If you land early, your chauffeur is early. If you land late, the pick-up moves with you and the waiting is included in the price — you do not need to call.

3. Name sign in arrivals

Your chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall at the baggage exit of your terminal, holding a sign with your name. He takes the luggage and walks you to the car, a recent Mercedes parked as close as the airport allows.

4. Dropped at the exact terminal

Tell us your onward flight and you are dropped at the departures kerb of the right terminal — Orly 1, 2, 3 or 4, or CDG 1, 2A to 2G or 3 — not at a generic airport entrance. Same fixed price whatever the traffic.

CDG and Orly terminals: where your chauffeur waits

Both airports are spread over several terminals, and the walk between them can be long — which is why we ask for your flight number rather than just the airport. Your chauffeur goes to the arrivals hall of the terminal your flight actually uses, at the exit from baggage reclaim, with a sign bearing your name.

Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG)

Terminal 1, Terminal 2 (halls 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F and 2G) and Terminal 3. Most long-haul flights use Terminal 2; hall 2G is a separate building reached by shuttle bus, so allow a few extra minutes there. Meeting point: the arrivals hall at the baggage exit of your hall.

Paris-Orly (ORY)

Orly 1, Orly 2, Orly 3 and Orly 4, linked by walkways. Orly handles most domestic flights, Corsica, the French overseas departments and many Mediterranean and North African routes. Meeting point: the arrivals hall of your terminal, at the exit from baggage reclaim.

Not sure which terminal your flight uses? Book with the flight number and we check it for you. Starting or finishing in central Paris rather than at the other airport? Our guides CDG to Paris and Orly to Paris cover every option into the city.

Who is this for?

International connections

A long-haul landing at CDG and a flight to Corsica, the French overseas departments or the south of France from Orly — or the reverse. The classic case, and the one where a fixed price and a chauffeur already waiting matter most.

Families with luggage

Suitcases, a pushchair, a child seat on request and children who have just spent eight hours in the air. A Business van takes up to 7 passengers and 7 suitcases; the alternative is the RER with everything on your shoulders.

Business travellers

A quiet car, a chauffeur who knows the terminals, an invoice with VAT, and the price known before the trip. Companies can open an account for monthly invoicing.

Groups and airline crews

Up to 7 in a V-Class, up to 19 in a Sprinter minibus, or several vehicles leaving together. One booking, one price, everyone at the right terminal at the same time.

Night transfers

A late arrival at CDG and an early departure from Orly the next morning. A same-evening transfer is possible, so you sleep near your departure airport instead of crossing Paris at dawn — at the same price as by day.

Need the car for longer than the crossing — a stop in Paris between two flights, a meeting on the way? Our chauffeur by the hour keeps the same vehicle and chauffeur with you for as long as you need.

CDG to Orly transfer — your questions answered

How long does it take to get from CDG to Orly?

By road, about 45 minutes when traffic is light and 1 h to 1 h 30 at peak times, typically weekdays from 7 to 10 am and from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. The two airports are about 45 to 50 km apart. By RER B and Orlyval, or RER B and Metro line 14, allow about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 door to door, with a change and your luggage to carry.

How much is a private transfer from CDG to Orly?

About €165 for a Business sedan (3 passengers), about €215 for a van (up to 7 passengers), about €270 in First Class and €499 for a Sprinter minibus (up to 19). The exact price depends on the terminals and is fixed before you book. It includes VAT, tolls, luggage, flight tracking and waiting if your flight is late, with no night or weekend surcharge.

Is there a taxi flat fare between CDG and Orly?

No. The regulated Paris taxi flat fares only apply between Paris and each airport (€36 or €44 for Orly, €56 or €65 for CDG, depending on the bank of the Seine). Between CDG and Orly the taxi runs on the meter, so the fare varies with traffic and is not known in advance. It usually ends up close to our price, but with no guaranteed price or vehicle.

Is there a direct bus or shuttle between CDG and Orly?

As far as we know, there is no longer a direct public bus between the two airports: the former direct line was withdrawn. Today a CDG Orly shuttle means either the train with a change (RER B plus Orlyval or Metro 14) or a private car booked in advance, which is the only door-to-door option with no change.

How do I get from CDG to Orly by train?

Two ways. Take the RER B from CDG to Antony and change to the Orlyval automatic shuttle, which serves the Orly terminals. Or take the RER B to Châtelet–Les Halles and change to Metro line 14, extended to Orly airport in 2024. Both take about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 door to door and involve stairs, corridors and platforms with your luggage.

What is the minimum connection time between CDG and Orly?

We recommend at least 4 hours between landing at one airport and departure from the other. CDG and Orly are two separate airports: you collect your bags, cross Paris by road, then check in and clear security again. Allow 3 h 30 only if you know both airports well and travel off-peak. Check with your airline whether both flights are on one ticket, as this changes what happens if the first flight is late.

What happens if my flight into CDG or Orly is late?

Nothing changes for you. We track your flight number in real time, so your chauffeur adjusts to your actual landing time and waits for you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Waiting caused by a delayed flight is included in the fixed price.

Can I book a CDG to Orly transfer at night, on a Sunday or at the last minute?

Yes. We operate 7 days a week, day and night, and the displayed price carries no night or weekend surcharge. Online booking takes about 2 minutes; for a same-day or same-evening transfer, call us on +33 1 53 26 04 33 and we will tell you straight away whether a car is available.
