Reims & Champagne - good to know

  • ~145 km from Paris, about 1h30 by motorway, an easy day trip.
  • What to see: the Gothic cathedral (coronation of French kings) and the great Champagne houses.
  • Tastings: Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery and others, best booked in advance.
  • Wait & return with a dedicated chauffeur, plus vans for groups.

Our tip: a full-day chauffeur lets you enjoy the tastings without worrying about driving back. We can build a route around the cathedral and two or three houses.

Planning your Reims & Champagne day

A day in Reims pairs effortlessly with a chauffeur: roughly 1h30 from Paris by motorway, you can be tasting in a historic cellar by late morning. A typical itinerary takes in the UNESCO Gothic cathedral where French kings were crowned, lunch in the city, and one or two great Champagne houses — Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Mumm — whose chalk cellars are best visited with a pre-booked tour. Your chauffeur handles the route and parking while you relax and enjoy the tastings, with no worry about driving back.

How long does the day take?

Plan a full day: about 1h30 each way plus the cathedral and two tastings. We tailor the timing to your reservations.

Can we add Épernay or a lunch stop?

Yes — we can include Épernay and the Avenue de Champagne, or a gastronomic lunch, in a custom route.

Coronation city and capital of Champagne

Reims wears two crowns. For over a thousand years its soaring Gothic cathedral, Notre-Dame de Reims, was the setting for the coronation of the kings of France — some thirty of them, from the Middle Ages to 1825 — and Joan of Arc stood beside Charles VII here in 1429. A UNESCO World Heritage site alongside the neighbouring Palace of Tau, the cathedral is celebrated for its statuary and its Marc Chagall stained glass. Beneath the city lies its other treasure: kilometres of chalk cellars, or crayères, where the great Champagne houses age their bottles in cool, constant darkness. Combine the culture and the cellars with a flexible hourly chauffeur service to move at your own pace.

The famous names — Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Mumm and others — offer guided visits and tastings that are best reserved in advance, and many sit just minutes apart within the city. Since the whole point of a tasting day is that no one has to drive, a private chauffeur to Reims is the natural choice: you travel the roughly 1h30 from Paris in comfort, are dropped at each cellar door, and return home safely in the evening. Add nearby Épernay and its Avenue de Champagne for a fuller day among the vineyards.

Why is Reims cathedral so important?

It was the traditional coronation church of French kings for centuries, making it one of the most historically significant cathedrals in France. Its Gothic architecture and Chagall windows draw visitors in their own right.

Do I need to book champagne house visits in advance?

Yes, we strongly recommend it. The major houses run scheduled guided tours and tastings that fill up, especially in peak season and at weekends; we can help coordinate the timings.

Can we visit both Reims and Épernay in a day?

Yes. With a private chauffeur a full day comfortably covers the cathedral, a cellar tour or two in Reims, and Épernay's Avenue de Champagne, tailored to your reservations.
