Why a private driver is the practical way to cross the Channel with a pet

At the time of writing, Eurostar passenger trains between Paris and London accept only recognised assistance dogs on board. Family dogs and cats cannot travel on the train, and airlines on this short route generally place animals in the hold or refuse them altogether.

A private car changes everything. The Channel Tunnel vehicle shuttle (Le Shuttle) and the cross-Channel ferries welcome pets travelling in a vehicle, so your dog or cat stays in the cabin with you from Paris to your final address. Your chauffeur handles the route, the crossing booking and the stop at the pet reception point, while you simply enjoy the journey.

Operator rules and pet policies are subject to change. We recommend checking the current conditions of Eurostar, Le Shuttle or the ferry company before you travel; we will also confirm them when preparing your quote.

Before you travel

Pet travel checklist for entering Great Britain

To enter England, Scotland or Wales from France with a dog, cat or ferret, your animal generally needs the following. We review each item with you before departure, but the responsibility for valid paperwork remains with the owner.

  • Microchip
Fitted before the rabies vaccination and readable at the terminal.
  • Rabies vaccination
Valid and administered after the microchip, with the required waiting period completed before travel.
  • Animal health certificate or accepted pet passport
Issued by an authorised veterinarian within the required period before travel. Pet passports issued in the European Union are accepted for entry into Great Britain under the current rules; check which document applies to your situation.
  • Tapeworm treatment for dogs
Given by a veterinarian and recorded in the documents between one and five days (24 to 120 hours) before arrival in Great Britain. Not required for cats.

Rules can change. Always check the official GOV.UK pet travel page (gov.uk/bring-pet-to-great-britain) before departure, and confirm the pet policy of Le Shuttle or your ferry operator.

Travel point of entry

Pets arriving by car must use an approved route. The Le Shuttle terminal at Calais and the main ferry ports to Dover are approved routes with a pet reception point where documents and microchips are checked.

What to bring in the car

Water and a bowl, a familiar blanket, a lead and harness, waste bags, a small amount of food, and a secure carrier or crate for cats and small dogs.

Short guide

Traveling with a pet in Paris

Paris is a genuinely pet friendly city once you know its habits. Here are the essentials for a dog in Paris, before your pet taxi takes you on to London.

Getting around with a dog in Paris

Small dogs in a carrier travel free on the Métro and buses; larger dogs on a lead and muzzle are admitted on some lines but rules vary. Ordinary taxis may refuse animals. A private chauffeur booked in advance removes the uncertainty, whatever the size of your dog.

Pet friendly Paris: cafés, parks and hotels

Dogs are welcome on most café terraces and in many hotels of all categories, often for a supplement. Many formal gardens restrict dogs to certain paths; the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes offer the most freedom. Always carry waste bags.

Veterinary care before departure

Paris has many English-speaking veterinarians who can issue the animal health certificate and administer the tapeworm treatment within the required window. Book the appointment as soon as your travel date is confirmed; we can schedule the clinic transfer for you.

Let us take care of the journey

Whether you are relocating, returning home or simply visiting, our pet taxi service from Paris to London, to the Paris airports or across the city gives you one professional contact for every leg of the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Pet taxi Paris to London: your questions answered

How much does a pet taxi from Paris to London cost?

The price is given on request. It depends on your pickup address in Paris or the surrounding region, your destination in London or elsewhere in the United Kingdom, the vehicle chosen, the number of pets travelling and the Le Shuttle or ferry crossing fees. Request a quote and we reply with a fixed, all-inclusive price with no surprises on the day.

Can I take my dog on the Eurostar from Paris to London?

At the time of writing, Eurostar only accepts recognised assistance dogs on board. Other dogs and cats are not permitted, which is why a private car crossing the Channel via Le Shuttle or a ferry is the practical option for most pet owners. Always check the current rules of the operator before planning your journey.

How long does the journey from Paris to London take with a pet?

Door to door, allow roughly seven to nine hours including the Le Shuttle crossing, pet document checks at the terminal and comfort stops for your animal. Traffic and crossing schedules can extend this time, so we recommend a morning departure.

What documents does my pet need to enter Great Britain?

Your pet generally needs a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, an animal health certificate or valid pet passport accepted for entry, and, for dogs, a tapeworm treatment given by a veterinarian between one and five days before arrival. Rules can change, so always check the official GOV.UK pet travel page before departure.

Which vehicle is best for travelling with a pet?

For large dogs, several pets or a travel crate, we recommend the Mercedes V-Class or the electric Mercedes EQV. For one small dog or cat in a carrier, the Mercedes E-Class or the electric Mercedes EQE is comfortable and discreet.

Information about pet entry rules is provided for guidance only and may change. Please consult the official GOV.UK pet travel page and your transport operator before departure. For the full step-by-step crossing, read our guide to travelling with pets on the Eurotunnel shuttle.
